The small
business sector is very crucial to any economy these days, hence, small business owners
(SBOs) are very indispensable in today’s economy. However, due to the upsurge in
the demand for online presence by SBOs, a lot of them may not take the full
advantage of various opportunities online, including the acquisition of free
domain names. In fact, many of them have misconstrued the notion of getting
free domains while some have gone through the wrong approach to get theirs.
As a small
business owner who wants free domain names to be a blessing, it is very
important for you to get the approach right. While there are indeed free
domains on offer on the internet, there are some that are not good for a small
business owner even though they are free. Whenever you are going for a free
domain, it is essential for you to ensure that you get a top-level domain (TLD)
and not a sub-domain. A TLD consists of a name and its extension (e.g. ‘read.com’),
where .com is the extension. A research conducted in 2013 revealed that 63% of
SBOs do not consider the extensions of a name, consequently, you should take
note of this when choosing a name.
On the other
hand, a sub-domain is derived from a TLD, for example, if I want to derive a
sub from the example above, we will have names like ‘daily.read.com’, ‘weekly.read.com’,
‘monthly.read.com’ and so on. A sub-domain is not a blessing for a small
business owner because there are restrictions to its use. You won’t have access
to the domain management system (DNS) which is very vital for domain
management. Also, your web pages may be full of unsolicited and irrelevant
adverts which can damage the reputation of your business. The domain owner can
also get you off the World Wide Web at his/her discretion and this can waste
your time as well as effort.
Furthermore,
the extension that will be registered must be put into consideration. The .com
extension is for commercial websites, .biz for businesses, .net for online
ventures, .info for blogs, .org for organizations, .gov for government
establishments and agencies, .edu for educational institutions, .pro for
professionals and so on. You need to choose the extension right because it will
indicate the type of website you are floating to potential visitors.
Free domain names
will make the setting up of your website easier thereby leading to the
automation of your business. There are many business processes that become
easier with a website like promotion, bookkeeping, tax remittance, finance,
sales management and so on. Hence, a small business owner should take advantage
of a free domain in order to initiate an online presence or boost it.
